Self catering and sailing holidays on the River Guadiana

Where is Casa Amarilla and how do we get there?

In Huelva province south west Andalusia, Spain,  Los Olivos and Casa Amarilla are located in remote country on the Spanish side of the beautiful Rio Guadiana.  The Guadiana is an unspoilt and beautiful river that travels over 400 miles through Spain and Portugal before flowing into the Atlantic on the Costa de la Luz. We are about 5 miles south of Sanlucar del Guadiana a timeless Spanish village and our nearest town some 45 minutes away is Ayamonte.

How do you get to us?

By air:
Although there are several airport options the easiest for direct flights is Faro in Portugal. It is only 1 1/2 hours away along the A49/IP1 motorways.
Alternatives are Seville, about 2 hours away with Jerez de la Frontera and Lisbon  some 3 hours away.
Gibraltar is 4 hours by car.
Malaga is another airport with many good and inexpensive flight connections about 5 hours  away and Madrid a 6 hour drive.

At all the airports you can hire cars and our recommendation is to check on line for the flights options that suit you and we have found that booking a car at the same time can often be very cost effective. Remember the earlier you book your flight the better the deal you get.

By car:
We are located about 35 minutes from the motorway system in Spain and If you are coming from the UK the driving distance from Cherbourg or Caen is around 1300 miles . We can make it in a relatively easy three days drive, almost all of it on motorways although one of our pleasures is to make this a mini holiday in itself taking the time to stop en route and explore.

Both Santander and Bilboa are about 650 miles away, with Biarritz about 750 miles, again mostly motorway and though it is possible to reach us in a good solid days driving we recommend a stop on the way.

Hotels in both France and Spain offer good value and  there are many  simple hotels well located and convenient along the major routes.

We have completed the journey many times now and are happy to share our experiences on possible stopover hotels and B&B's.

By train/bus: The nearest train in Spain stops at Huelva with good connections from Seville and Madrid by AVE the Spanish high speed train link. Huelva is about 1 hour away by car. Alternatively you can then catch a bus to Ayamonte and then on to our local village Sanlucar de Guadiana from where we would be happy to collect you.

On the Portuguese side you can get a train from Lisbon to Vila Real de Santo Antonio which is a short ferry ride across the river Guadiana from Ayamonte and thence a bus or taxi ride to Sanlucar from where we would collect you.

So check out the deals we would really love you  to come and 'share our secret'
